About ODT

An ODT is a ZIP of XML files: the text with its styles, the pictures and the document's details. OASIS made OpenDocument a standard in 2005 from OpenOffice.org's own format, and ISO followed in 2006 with ISO/IEC 26300. OTT is a template, FODT the same document in one plain XML file, and SXW the OpenOffice.org 1 format it grew from.

LibreOffice and OpenOffice save ODT by default, and Word, Google Docs and Pages read it. Governments such as the UK's and France's ask for it as an open standard for documents they share.

Filepeek reads the ODT itself and lays it out as pages, with its fonts, pictures, tables, notes, headers and footers. Final, Markup and Original show its tracked changes and comments, and a file locked with a password opens once you type it.

Questions

How do I open an ODT file without LibreOffice?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek an ODT. It opens at once as pages fitted to your window.

Can I open an ODT on a Mac or an iPhone?

Yes. Filepeek opens it in Safari, Chrome and any other browser, and on a phone the text is reflowed to fit the screen.

Can I see the tracked changes?

Yes. Markup shows what was added and deleted, by whom and when, and the comments. Final shows the document with every change accepted.

Does it open FODT files?

Yes. A FODT is the same document in one XML file, and it opens the same way.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The document opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
