About PAK
.pak is one name for several formats. Quake and Half-Life keep their maps, models and sounds in PACK files, Unreal Engine 4 and 5 games in paks with their index at the end, Larian's games, Baldur's Gate 3 among them, in LSPK packages, CryEngine games in ZIPs, and Chrome and Electron apps their pictures and pages in resources.pak.
Each keeps a directory of its files, with their names, offsets and sizes. Unreal paks pack their files with zlib, gzip, LZ4, Zstandard or Oodle, and a game can encrypt their index with a key it keeps. Larian's pack theirs with LZ4, zlib or Zstandard.
Filepeek tells them apart by their bytes and lists each like a folder. A Quake map opens in the 3D viewer and its pictures in the pack's palette, and a Baldur's Gate 3 mod gets a page from its meta.lsx. A pak whose index is encrypted, or whose files are packed with Oodle, says so plainly.

How do I open a PAK file?
Drop it on this page or choose Peek a PAK. Filepeek tells which game's format it is by its bytes and lists its files like a folder.
Can I open Unreal Engine paks?
Yes, from version 1 to 11, when their index isn't encrypted. Files packed with zlib, gzip, LZ4 or Zstandard open, and files packed with Oodle, which is closed, are listed.
Does it open Baldur's Gate 3 mods?
Yes. A mod's .pak opens as a folder, with a page beside it on the mod from its meta.lsx: its name, author, version and UUID. Its LSF files open as trees.
