About WAD

Doom, made by id Software in 1993, keeps everything in a WAD: the whole game in an IWAD, like DOOM2.WAD, and a mod's maps and graphics in a PWAD loaded over it. Heretic, Hexen, Strife and Freedoom use the same format, and Quake and Half-Life named their texture files WAD too.

A WAD is a list of lumps, each an 8 letter name, an offset and a size. A map is its marker lump, like MAP01 or E1M1, then its things, lines, sides, vertices and sectors. Pictures are drawn in the WAD's palette, PLAYPAL, sounds are DMX samples and music is MUS, Doom's own MIDI.

Filepeek names the game by its lumps and draws every map with its monsters, items and secrets at each skill, and a map opens as a picture of its own, drawn as the automap shows it. Pictures open in the WAD's palette as PNGs, sounds play as WAV and music as MIDI. A Quake or Half-Life WAD shows its textures, and a Wii WAD what title it is, never decrypted.

Questions

How do I see what's in a Doom WAD?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek a WAD. Its lumps are sorted into maps, graphics, sprites, flats, textures, sounds and music, with a page beside them on each map.

Can I see a map without playing it?

Yes. Every map is drawn on the WAD's page with what it holds at each skill, and opens on its own as the automap shows it, sectors shaded by their light.

Can I hear its music?

Yes. MUS music plays as MIDI, through the same sounds as a MIDI file, and sound effects play as WAV.

Does it open Quake and Half-Life WADs?

Yes. WAD2 and WAD3 files, Quake's and Half-Life's textures, open as a folder of pictures.

Is my WAD uploaded?

No. It opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
