About BSP

BSP, for binary space partition, is how id Software's Quake stored its levels in 1996, and the games after it kept the name: Quake II and III, Half-Life and Counter-Strike, and Valve's Source games, like Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source and Global Offensive, Team Fortress 2, Portal and Garry's Mod.

A BSP is the level a map editor's compiler made: its faces from vertices, edges and planes, the lightmaps that light it, its textures or their names, Quake III's curved patches, Source's displacement terrain and props, and the entities that place spawns, lights, doors and triggers.

Filepeek builds every face in meters and lights the level with its lightmaps, packed into one atlas. Textures come from the file, from a Source map's pakfile, or from the WADs and PAKs dropped with it. The entities are listed in the Scene panel with their keys in Inspect, and Walk takes you through it at eye height on a computer.

Questions

How do I view a BSP map without the game?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek a BSP. The level opens in 3D, lit as its compiler baked it, with its entities in the Scene panel.

Why are some surfaces plain colors?

Source maps take their stock textures from the game's own VPKs, which Filepeek doesn't have. Those faces take the average color the map keeps for each material, and textures packed in the map, or dropped with it, show as they are.

Can I walk through the level?

Yes, on a computer. Press Walk, then move with W A S D or the arrow keys and drag to look. Esc stops.

Is my map uploaded?

No. It opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
