About PK3
Quake III Arena, made by id Software in 1999, loads its data from .pk3 files, and so do the games built on its engine, like Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Star Wars Jedi Knight II and the first Call of Duty, and its free heirs, ioquake3 and OpenArena. Map makers share their maps as .pk3 files too.
A .pk3 is a ZIP. Maps are BSP files in maps/, with a level shot of each in levelshots/, beside textures in TGA or JPEG, shader scripts that say how surfaces draw, models and sounds. An .arena file in scripts/ names each map for the game's menus.
Filepeek lists a .pk3 like a folder, with a page of its maps and their level shots. A map opens in the 3D viewer, lit by its lightmaps, and pictures, sounds and scripts open on their own.
