About PFB

Adobe made Type 1 fonts for PostScript in 1984, and with the LaserWriter and the first desktop publishing apps they became the fonts of print. Adobe published the format in 1990. Its own apps stopped reading Type 1 fonts in 2023, and many others have too.

A Type 1 font is a small PostScript program: its glyphs are cubic outlines in a language of their own, hinted for printers and encrypted with a simple cipher. A PFB keeps it in binary segments, a PFA as text, and an AFM or PFM beside it keeps its spacing and kerning.

Filepeek decrypts the font in your browser and turns it into an OpenType font, with the kerning of an AFM or PFM opened with it. See every glyph, type in it, and save it as OTF to install it again, or as WOFF2 for the web.

Questions

How do I open a PFB file?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek a PFB. Every glyph shows at once. Drop its AFM or PFM with it, or open their folder, and its kerning comes along.

Can I turn a Type 1 font into an OpenType font?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as OTF. You get an OpenType font with the same outlines, which apps install and use again.

Why did my Type 1 fonts stop working?

Adobe's apps stopped reading Type 1 fonts in 2023, and other apps have too. Saved as OTF, the same font works again.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The font opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
