About VDF

Valve's KeyValues is the format of Steam's settings and Source's game files: libraryfolders.vdf lists where Steam keeps its games, each game's appmanifest .acf what's installed, shortcuts.vdf the games added from outside Steam, and Source's .vmt files describe its materials.

Text KeyValues is quoted keys and values in nested braces, with comments and conditions like [$WIN32]. Binary KeyValues, as shortcuts.vdf and appinfo.vdf are, puts a type byte before each key. Gothic's .vdf files are archives instead, of 80 byte entries.

Filepeek reads both forms into a tree and gives Steam's own files an Overview: each library with its path and its games by app ID and size, and each shortcut with its program, start folder and launch options. A Gothic VDF opens as a folder.

Questions

How do I open a VDF file?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek a VDF. Text or binary, it opens as a tree of its keys and values, and Steam's own files get an Overview.

What's in shortcuts.vdf?

The games added to Steam from outside it, each with its name, program, start folder and launch options, which its Overview lists.

Does it open ACF and VMT files?

Yes. App manifests (.acf) and Source's materials (.vmt) are KeyValues too, and open as trees.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
