About VGM
VGM started in 2001 at SMS Power, to keep the music of Sega's Master System just as its sound chip played it. It grew to the Mega Drive, arcade boards, home computers and handhelds, and fans have ripped thousands of game soundtracks into it.
A VGM holds no sound. It holds every write a game made to its sound chips and the waits between them, so a player drives the chips again just as the game did. Its GD3 tags name the song, the game, the system and the composer, and a VGZ is the same file compressed with gzip.
No browser plays VGM by itself. Filepeek plays the chips inside your browser: Yamaha's FM chips through ymfm, the FM engine MAME uses, and players of its own for the SN76489, the NES, the Game Boy, the PC Engine, Konami's SCC and the OKI, Sega and Ricoh sample chips. The YM2608 keeps its drums in a ROM inside the chip, so Filepeek plays stand-ins of its own for them.

Questions
How do I play a VGM file?
Drop it on this page or press Peek a VGM. Its chips play right in your browser, and Show tags lists the song, the game, the system, the composer and the chips it plays on.
Does it play VGZ files?
Yes. A VGZ is a VGM compressed with gzip, and it plays just the same.
Which chips does it play?
The SN76489, Yamaha's YM2413, YM2612, YM2151, YM2203, YM2608, YM2610, YM3812, YM3526, Y8950, YMF262 and YMF278B, the AY-3-8910 and YM2149, the NES with the Famicom Disk System's sound, the Game Boy, the PC Engine's HuC6280, Konami's SCC, the OKIM6295, SegaPCM and Ricoh's RF5C68 and RF5C164. A song on other chips plays without those, and Show tags names them.
How long does a song play?
Through once, then its loop once more and a 5 second fade, as VGM players play them. A song with no loop plays once, to its end.
Can I turn a VGM into an MP3?
Yes. Choose Export, then Save as MP3 or WAV, and the song is saved as it plays here, loop and fade included. Drag the handles on the waveform strip to keep only a part.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The chips play inside your browser, and the file never leaves your device.
