About WMA

Microsoft released Windows Media Audio in 1999 to rival MP3. Windows Media Player ripped CDs to WMA by default, so many old music collections are full of it.

A WMA is an ASF file with sound alone. Most hold WMA Standard, while WMA Pro carries 5.1 and 24-bit sound, WMA Lossless keeps CD quality and WMA Voice holds speech.

No browser plays WMA, and Macs need extra apps for it. Filepeek decodes every kind with FFmpeg inside your browser, and Export saves an MP3 that plays anywhere. Songs with Windows Media copy protection stay locked.

Questions

How do I play WMA on a Mac?

Drop it on this page or press Peek a WMA. Filepeek decodes it in your browser, with nothing to install, and Export saves an MP3 that Apple Music and iPhones play.

Why won't some WMA files play?

Songs bought or rented from online stores in the 2000s are often locked with Windows Media copy protection. Filepeek can't unlock them.

Can I convert WMA to MP3?

Yes. Open a song, choose Export, then Save as MP3. Its title, artist, album and cover go into the MP3.

Is my music uploaded?

No. The WMA is decoded inside your browser and never sent to a server.
