About WPS

Kingsoft released WPS, for Word Processing System, for DOS in China in 1988, and WPS Office grew into a free suite for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone. Its Writer saves .wps documents and .wpt templates besides Word's own formats.

Inside, a WPS Office document is built like Word 97-2003's DOC: a Compound File holding the text, styles, tables, pictures, headers and footers. Microsoft Works used the same extension for its own word processor files, which are a different format.

Filepeek reads it in your browser as the Word document it is and lays out every page with its fonts, styles, tables, pictures, headers and footers. Reflow fits the text to your screen, search counts every match, and Export saves it as PDF, its pages as PNG or JPEG, or its text as Markdown.

Questions

Why won't Word open my WPS file?

Word only lists Microsoft's own formats, and .wps from WPS Office isn't one, though it's built like Word 97-2003's DOC inside. Drop it here instead: Filepeek reads it as the Word document it is, and Export saves it as a PDF anyone can open.

Why won't my .wps from Microsoft Works open?

Microsoft Works used .wps for its own word processor files, a different format from WPS Office's, which Filepeek doesn't read. LibreOffice Writer opens Works files and saves them as DOCX.

Can I turn a WPS file into a PDF?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as PDF, which saves every page through the print window, or save the pages as PNG or JPEG.
