About ARJ

Robert K. Jung released ARJ in 1991, and its name is said to stand for Archived by Robert Jung. It was a common archiver on DOS in the early and mid 1990s, next to PKZIP.

ARJ could split an archive into volumes across floppy disks, so a whole hard disk fit on a stack of them. Software and backups from the DOS days often come as .arj files.

No browser opens ARJ by itself. Filepeek reads it with 7-Zip compiled to WebAssembly, lists its files like a folder and opens the one you pick, and Save as ZIP turns it into a ZIP that any computer opens.

Questions

How do I open an ARJ file?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek an ARJ. Its files are listed like a folder, and the one you pick opens right away, with no DOS program to run.

Can I read the texts inside?

Yes. A README, NFO or other text opens in the text viewer, where you can pick the DOS code page for old box drawing and art.

Can I get everything out at once?

Yes. Choose Export, then Extract all, and pick a folder, in Chrome and Edge on computers. Names are cleaned so they're safe on any system.

Can I turn it into a ZIP?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as ZIP. Phones and computers open the ZIP without an app.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The archive is read inside your browser and never leaves your device. Nothing in it runs.
