About LZH

Haruyasu Yoshizaki, a doctor, released LHarc in 1988, and its successor took the name LHA. Its archives became the usual way to share software in Japan as .lzh, and on the Amiga as .lha.

An LZH holds many files, each compressed with LZSS and Huffman coding, in methods named like -lh5-, -lh6- and -lh7-. LHA started on MS-DOS and was ported to the Amiga, the Atari, Mac OS, OS/2 and Unix.

No browser opens LZH by itself. Filepeek reads it with 7-Zip compiled to WebAssembly, lists its files like a folder and opens the one you pick, and Save as ZIP turns it into a ZIP that any computer opens.

Questions

How do I open an LZH file?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek an LZH. Its files are listed like a folder, and the one you pick opens right away, with no LHA to install.

Are LZH and LHA files the same?

Yes. LHA is the program, and its archives end in .lzh on PCs and .lha on the Amiga. Filepeek opens both.

Can I open old Amiga archives?

Yes. Amiga software, like the files on Aminet, usually comes as .lha. Filepeek lists what's inside, opens texts such as readme files, and any other file can be saved.

Can I turn it into a ZIP?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as ZIP. Phones and computers open the ZIP without an app.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The archive is read inside your browser and never leaves your device.
