About ASSET

Unity saves many kinds of assets as .asset files: the ScriptableObjects a game's code defines, lighting and terrain data, animation controllers, and a project's settings in ProjectSettings. A built game's data files, like sharedassets0.assets and resources.assets, are assets too, in binary.

In a project they are usually text, YAML documents headed by their class ID like a scene's, and binary when a project is set to Force Binary. Binary files, Unity's SerializedFile, start with their version, the Unity version and platform they were built for and a list of objects by class, with the type tree that names their fields when the file keeps it.

Filepeek reads a text asset into a tree of its objects and fields by class. A binary one gets an Overview with its Unity version, platform and objects by class, and their fields when it keeps its type tree.
