About META
Unity writes a .meta file beside every file and folder in a project's Assets: its GUID, by which other files point at it, and its importer's settings, like a texture's size and compression or a model's scale.
A Unity .meta is YAML: fileFormatVersion, guid, then the importer and its settings. Grand Theft Auto V names its data files .meta too, like vehicles.meta and handling.meta, and those are XML.
Filepeek shows a Unity .meta's GUID and importer in an Overview above its tree, and opens GTA V's as an XML tree. Dropped with a scene, the .meta files name the scripts it uses.
