About E57

ASTM's committee on 3D imaging systems published E57 in 2011, as the standard ASTM E2807, so scans could move between scanners and software. Leica Cyclone, FARO Scene, Trimble RealWorks, Autodesk ReCap and CloudCompare all read and write it.

An E57 holds an XML tree that describes each scan, its name, its scanner and where the scanner stood, then the points of each scan packed as bits, in cartesian or spherical coordinates, with their intensity and colors, and often the photos the scanner took.

Filepeek reads it in your browser: each scan set where its scanner stood, in its colors, by intensity or by height, with the scans in a list beside it to hide one or see it alone. Export saves the points as GLB, or the view as PNG.

Questions

How do I view an E57 file?

Drop it on this page or press Peek an E57. Every scan opens in 3D where its scanner stood.

Can I see one scan alone?

Yes. Each scan is in the list beside the cloud. Hide one or see it alone.

Does it open a big project?

Yes. The scans are read in slices, and past 10 million points on a computer, or 2 million on a phone, the points shown are spread evenly over every scan.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
