About LAS

The American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing made LAS in 2003 so lidar could move between tools. Mapping agencies like the USGS publish their elevation scans as LAS, and drones, survey scanners and apps like CloudCompare, QGIS and ArcGIS read and write it.

A LAS starts with a header that gives the cloud's bounds and scale and records that name its coordinate system, then holds each point as a run of bytes: its X, Y and Z, how strong its return was, which return of the pulse it was and its class, like ground, high vegetation or building, with its color and GPS time in some point formats.

Filepeek reads it in your browser in slices, so a big survey opens too: in its own colors when it has them, or else by class or by height. Pick Height, Class or Intensity to color it another way, hide a class or see it alone, click the points to see how many a class holds, and Export saves the points as GLB, or the view as PNG.

Questions

How do I view a LAS file?

Drop it on this page or press Peek a LAS. The cloud opens in 3D, in its own colors, by class or by height.

Can I color it by height or by class?

Yes. Pick Height for a ramp from low to high, Class for its classes, like ground, buildings and trees, or Intensity for how strong each return was.

Does it open a big survey?

Yes. The file is read in slices, and past 10 million points on a computer, or 2 million on a phone, the points shown are spread evenly over the whole cloud.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
