About HWP
Hancom released Hangul in 1989, and it became South Korea's word processor, the one its ministries, courts, schools and companies have written in for decades. Its .hwp documents and .hwt templates are Hangul's own binary format, which Word and most office apps don't read.
Inside, an HWP file from Hangul 2002 or later is a Compound File, like Word 97-2003's DOC, whose streams are packed with deflate: the styles first, then each section's paragraphs with their tables, text boxes, pictures, footnotes, headers and footers. A distribution document, which Hangul saves to be read but not changed or copied, keeps its sections encrypted with a key inside the file.
Filepeek reads it in your browser and lays out every page in its size and margins, with its fonts, outline numbering, tables, text boxes, pictures, footnotes, endnotes, headers, footers and page numbers. Old Hangul that Hangul kept in the private use area shows as Unicode's jamo, search counts every match, and Export saves it as PDF, its pages as PNG or JPEG, or its text as Markdown.

Questions
How do I open an HWP file without Hangul?
Drop it here: Filepeek lays out its pages in your browser on Windows, Mac, Linux or a phone, with nothing to install. Hancom's free Hancom Office Viewer opens HWP files too.
Why won't my HWP file open?
Files from Hangul 97 and older are in an earlier format, HWP 3, and files saved with a password are encrypted with it, and Filepeek reads neither. Hangul opens both and can save them again as HWPX.
Why do lines break differently than in Hangul?
Hangul's own fonts, like Hamchorom Batang, come with Hancom Office, so most devices don't have them. Filepeek sets the text in the device's Korean fonts of the same kind, serif for serif, so a line can end a word earlier or later than in Hangul.
Can I turn an HWP file into a PDF?
Yes. Choose Export, then Save as PDF, which saves every page through the print window, or save the pages as PNG or JPEG. For a Word file, Hangul saves its documents as DOCX.
